The vector triple product identity gives n×(x×n)=x−(n⋅x)n. Decompose x=x⊥+x∥, where x∥=(n⋅x)n and x⊥⋅n=0. Then
Φ(x)=x⊥+αx∥.
(1)
The linear map acts as the identity on n⊥ and as multiplication by α along n. Consequently it is invertible exactly when α=0, with
Φ−1(y)=y+(α−1−1)(n⋅y)n.
(2)
Applying Φ to this expression recovers the perpendicular and parallel components of y separately.
