The homogeneous linear recurrence relation has characteristic polynomial (λ−1)2, hence general solution hk=A+Bk. For the expected-time recurrence, rearrangement gives mk+1−2mk+mk−1=−2, for which −k2 is a particular solution. Thus
hk=A+Bk,mk=C+Dk−k2.

Imposing the absorbing boundary conditions from the preceding parts gives the gambler's ruin formulas
hk=20k,mk=k(20−k).
