A simplicial approximation to is a vertex map satisfying the open-star condition
for every vertex . Here an open star consists of points whose barycentric coordinate at that vertex is positive. This condition ensures that the images of the vertices of every simplex span a simplex of , and the vertex map extends linearly over simplices.
To triangulate , order the vertices of each complex consistently. For each product , use the simplices whose vertices follow monotone lattice paths from to , taking a step in one coordinate at a time. These prism triangulations agree on faces and cover the product.
If both approximate , choose in the relative interior of a simplex . Then belongs to the open star of every vertex of . Hence belongs to every open star of and . Its unique carrier simplex in contains all these vertices. Thus and are faces of that one simplex, proving that are contiguous simplicial maps.
For contiguous simplicial maps, and lie in a common simplex of for every . Its convexity makes
a well-defined map into , using the ambient Euclidean realization. The formula is continuous globally and agrees across simplex faces. At it equals , so it is the desired homotopy.
Let be a homotopy from to . The inverse images form a finite open cover of the compact product. By the Lebesgue number lemma there is such that every subset of diameter less than lies in one of these inverse images.
Choose a barycentric subdivision with all its open stars of diameter less than , and times with gaps less than . For each vertex and each time , the set
(with the evident endpoint conventions) has diameter less than in the product metric. Choose a vertex of whose open star contains its image under , and set .
At time , the star condition makes a simplicial approximation to . Adjacent intervals overlap, so choose a time in their overlap and a point in the interior of any simplex of . Its image belongs to the stars of every and for . As in (i), their vertices lie in one carrier simplex, proving contiguity. Thus the sequence starts with an approximation to , ends with one to , and has contiguous adjacent pairs. Relabeling its indices gives the requested .
Here denotes contiguity, with the endpoint maps approximating respectively.
