In the computational basis, write
ρ=21(1+szsx+isysx−isy1−sz).
(1)
The Kraus representation of the amplitude damping channel gives
Λ(ρ)=(ρ00+pρ111−pρ101−pρ01(1−p)ρ11).
(2)
Reading off its Bloch vector gives the Bloch-vector map of amplitude damping:
(sx,sy,sz)⟼(1−psx,1−psy,p+(1−p)sz).
(3)
Here 0≤p≤1. The shift in sz shows that this quantum channel is not unital unless p=0; its fixed ground state lies at the north pole, rather than the center of the Bloch sphere.
