Take canonical coordinates q=x1 and p=x2. The Hamiltonian system is
q˙=−∂pϕ(t,q,p),p˙=∂qϕ(t,q,p).
(1)
In the standard Hamilton's equations q˙=∂pH and p˙=−∂qH, its Hamiltonian is
H(t,q,p)=−ϕ(t,q,p).
(2)
An arbitrary function of t can be added without affecting the characteristic curves. The Hamiltonian generally depends on time through ω and need not be conserved along a trajectory.
