Interpret the Fourier transform as a distributional Fourier transform. Exponentially regularize the Heaviside step function:
e−axH(x)(k)=∫0∞e−(a+ik)xdx=a+ik1=a2+k2a−ia2+k2k,a>0.
(1)
As a↓0, the first term tends to πδ(k) in the tempered distribution sense, since its integral is π and it concentrates at zero. The second tends to −iPV(1/k). Therefore
H(k)=πδ(k)+PVik1.
(2)
The principal-value convention is essential: the printed 1/(ik) is not an ordinary integrable function at zero. This normalization also satisfies ikH=1, the Fourier transform of a derivative version of H′=δ.
