For the odd prime p, the Fermat-Euler theorem gives xp−1≡1(modp). Therefore the residue class z=x(p−1)/2 obeys (z−1)(z+1)≡0(modp). Since a prime number dividing a product divides one of its factors,
x(p−1)/2≡1 or −1(modp).
(1)
If x is a quadratic residue, choose y with y2≡x(modp). Then y is nonzero modulo p, and Fermat's little theorem gives
x(p−1)/2≡yp−1≡1(modp).
(2)
This proves the quadratic residue direction of Euler's criterion.
