Apply the triangle inequality to the path from x1 through y2 to y1:
∥x1−y1∥−∥x1−y2∥≤∥y1−y2∥.
(1)
This is one direction of the reverse triangle inequality. A second application of the triangle inequality, this time through x2, gives
∥x1−y1∥−∥x1−y2∥≤∥y1−y2∥≤∥x2−y1∥+∥x2−y2∥.
(2)
The resulting four-point triangle inequality follows without any assumptions on coincidences among the four points.
