Apply the divergence theorem to F=ψ∇ϕ, for functions smooth enough on the closure of the bounded piecewise smooth volume. The product rule gives
∇⋅(ψ∇ϕ)=∇ψ⋅∇ϕ+ψ∇2ϕ,(ψ∇ϕ)⋅n=ψ∂n∂ϕ.
(1)
Thus Green's first theorem, also called Green's first identity, is
∫V(ψ∇2ϕ+∇ψ⋅∇ϕ)dV=∫∂Vψ∂n∂ϕdS.
(2)
The normal is outward. This identifies the boundary term and its sign directly from the divergence theorem.
