Use the Lagrange interpolation polynomial
ℓj(t)=∏i=jxj−xit−xi,ℓj(xi)=δij.
(1)
Its square has degree 2n−2, so the exactness already proved gives
Aj=∫−11ℓj(t)2dt>0.
(2)
The positive weights of Gaussian quadrature follow because ℓj is a nonzero continuous polynomial. Thus these Gaussian quadrature weights are in fact positive, rather than merely nonnegative.
