Let f(r)=1−rs/r and parametrize the timelike geodesic by proper time τ. Time-translation and rotational symmetry conserve E=ft˙ and h=r2ϕ˙ in the equatorial plane. The normalized four-velocity obeys
−1=−ft˙2+f−1r˙2+r2ϕ˙2.
(1)
Substitution and multiplication by f give r˙2+f(1+h2/r2)=E2, or
21r˙2+V(r)=21E2,2V=(1−rs/r)(1+h2/r2).
(2)
The dot denotes a proper-time derivative, and E,h are energy and angular momentum per unit rest mass.
