For a bounded self-adjoint operator, g is orthogonal to its range exactly when ⟨Lf,g⟩=⟨f,Lg⟩=0 for every f, or equivalently Lg=0. Consequently
ranL=(kerL)⊥=Hif kerL={0}.

This is image-kernel orthogonality for an adjoint. Taking the double orthogonal complement gives the closure; it does not assert that the range itself is closed.
