A Cauchy sequence in a metric space satisfies: for every ε>0 there is N such that d(xm,xn)<ε whenever m,n≥N. Suppose a subsequence xnk converges to x∈X. Choose N so that the Cauchy bound is ε/2, and then choose k with nk≥N and d(xnk,x)<ε/2. For every n≥N, the triangle inequality gives
d(xn,x)≤d(xn,xnk)+d(xnk,x)<ε.
(1)
Thus the whole Cauchy sequence converges to the subsequential limit.
