b
For a closed piecewise continuously differentiable curve avoiding a, its winding number is
I(γ,a)=2πi1∫γz−adz.
(1)
Equivalently, for a parametrization γ:[u,v]→C, it is (2πi)−1∫uvγ′(t)/(γ(t)−a)dt, summed over the smooth pieces. A continuous choice of the argument of γ(t)−a along the parameter interval changes by an integer multiple of 2π between the endpoints; that integer is the winding number.
