In a charge-free and current-free vacuum, Maxwell equations give
∇⋅E=0,∇⋅B=0,∇×E=−∂tB,∇×B=μ0ϵ0∂tE.
(1)
Take the curl of Faraday's law and use the curl of the curl identity ∇×(∇×E)=∇(∇⋅E)−∇2E. The divergence term vanishes by Gauss's law, while the time derivative of the magnetic curl supplies −μ0ϵ0∂t2E. Thus
c21∂t2E−∇2E=0,∇⋅E=0,c=(ϵ0μ0)−1/2.
(2)
This is the transverse electromagnetic wave equation.
