Choose continuous argument lifts θ1,θ2 for the two curves. Their sum is a lift for their pointwise product, because
γ1(t)γ2(t)=∣γ1(t)∣∣γ2(t)∣ei(θ1(t)+θ2(t)).
(1)
Subtract its initial value from its final value to obtain
w(γ1γ2)=w(γ1)+w(γ2).
(2)
In particular, winding numbers subtract under pointwise division of curves avoiding zero.
