The Euler-Lagrange equations are
θ¨−sinθcosθϕ˙2=0,dtd(sin2θϕ˙)=0.
(1)
The coordinate ϕ is a cyclic coordinate, so its conjugate momentum
l=sin2θϕ˙
(2)
is conserved. Substitution into the first equation gives
θ¨=sin3θl2cosθ.
(3)
Multiplying by 2θ˙ shows that
dtd(θ˙2+sin2θl2)=0.
(4)
Thus h is conserved. Since l2/sin2θ=sin2θϕ˙2, h is the squared speed on the unit sphere, equivalently twice the kinetic energy.
