If a=0, the first equation defines the ellipse
x12+2x22=a2
(1)
in the (x1,x2)-plane, a smooth one-dimensional manifold, while x3=ax4 defines a one-dimensional linear subspace in the (x3,x4)-plane. Their product is a smooth manifold, parametrized by
(θ,t)⟼(acosθ,asinθ/2,at,t),
(2)
so dimXa=2.
For a=0, positivity of the first equation forces x1=x2=0, and the second forces x3=0. Hence
X0={(0,0,0,t):t∈R},
(3)
a smooth line. Therefore
 dimXa=2 for a=0,dimX0=1.
