Let X=Y∪Z, where Y, Z, and Y∩Z are path-connected subcomplexes containing the basepoint; small open neighbourhoods may be used to reduce to the usual open-cover statement. The Seifert-van Kampen theorem says that
π1(X)≅π1(Y)∗π1(Y∩Z)π1(Z).
(1)
More explicitly, this is the quotient of the free product π1(Y)∗π1(Z) by the normal closure of
iY∗(γ)iZ∗(γ)−1,γ∈π1(Y∩Z).
(2)
Equivalently, π1(X) is the pushout of the two inclusion-induced homomorphisms.
