Let dimV=2n and let V+=ker(S−I) and V−=ker(S+I) be the two eigenspaces. The involution identity gives a direct sum, since
v=2v+Sv+2v−Sv,V=V+⊕V−.
(1)
For u,v in either one of these eigenspaces, the anti-symplectic involution identity implies
Ω(u,v)=Ω(Su,Sv)=−Ω(u,v),
(2)
so both are isotropic subspaces of a symplectic vector space. Such a subspace has dimension at most n: W⊂WΩ and the nondegenerate bilinear form Ω gives dimWΩ=2n−dimW, where WΩ is the symplectic orthogonal complement. As their dimensions add to 2n, both have dimension n. Therefore
Fix(S)=V+ is a Lagrangian subspace.
