For a phase-mixed orbit, probability in a short arc is dt/T=ds/(Tv), so the line density on a Kepler orbit is inversely proportional to speed. At true anomaly θ,
r=1+ecosθa(1−e2)=a[1−ecosθ]+O(e2).
(1)
Using the vis-viva equation, v2=(GM⋆/a)[1+2ecosθ]+O(e2) and hence v=na[1+ecosθ]+O(e2). Therefore
λℓ(θ)∝1−ecosθ+O(e2).
(2)
For one particle, the normalized line probability is (2πa)−1(1−ecosθ)+O(e2). This is density per arc length; density per unit polar angle has a further factor ds/dθ≃a(1−ecosθ) and is proportional to 1−2ecosθ.
