Because f is irreducible, the ideal (f) is maximal in the polynomial ring k[X]. Hence
F=k[X]/(f)
(1)
is a field extension of k. Let α=X+(f)∈F. Evaluation in the quotient gives f(α)=0, and the factor theorem in F[X] gives
f(X)=(X−α)g(X)
(2)
for some g∈F[X]. This is the standard adjoining a root of an irreducible polynomial construction.
