5D
Introduce the Cauchy approximate identity
δε(x)=π(ε2+x2)ε.
(1)
It is an approximate identity converging to the Dirac delta function δ, and gε=δε′. For a smooth rapidly decaying test function ϕ, integration by parts gives
∫−∞∞ϕ(x)gε(x)dx=−∫−∞∞ϕ′(x)δε(x)dx⟶−ϕ′(0).
(2)
By the definition of the derivative of the Dirac delta, ⟨δ′,ϕ⟩=−ϕ′(0). Therefore the limit as a distribution is
gε⟶δ′.
