Here D=I, so the Jacobi iteration matrix is
H=I−A=0−α−α−α0−α−α−α0.
(1)
The all-ones vector is an eigenvector with eigenvalue −2α. On its two-dimensional orthogonal complement, the coordinates sum to zero and Hv=αv, so the other eigenvalue is α with multiplicity two. Therefore
ρ(H)=max{2∣α∣,∣α∣}=2∣α∣.
(2)
By Jacobi convergence for a three-by-three equicorrelation matrix, convergence occurs exactly for
−21<α<21.
(3)
At either endpoint the spectral radius is one, so convergence for arbitrary initial data fails.
