At an endemic equilibrium, I∗>0, so 0=I˙=I∗(βS∗−γ) forces
S∗=βγ.
(1)
The equation R˙=0 gives R∗=γI∗/α. The conservation law S∗+I∗+R∗=N therefore yields
I∗=β(α+γ)α(βN−γ),R∗=β(α+γ)γ(βN−γ).
(2)
A positive endemic state exists exactly when βN>γ, equivalently when the basic reproduction number R0=βN/γ exceeds one.
