For a nonzero vector v∈Rn, a Householder reflection is
H=I−2vTvvvT.
(1)
It is immediately symmetric. If P=vvT/(vTv), then P2=P, so
HTH=H2=(I−2P)2=I.
(2)
Hence H is also an orthogonal matrix, with H−1=H.
The similarity transformation can be expanded as
HAH=A−2PA−2AP+4PAP.
(3)
Computing vTA, Av, and the scalar vTAv costs O(n2) arithmetic operations, after which the remaining updates are outer products and scalar multiples, also costing O(n2). Thus HAH−1 can be formed in O(n2) operations rather than by two general O(n3) matrix multiplications.
