At constant volume, the First law of thermodynamics gives
δQ=dE=CVdT.
(1)
At constant pressure,
δQ=CpdT=dE+pdV.
(2)
Differentiating pV=NkBT at fixed p gives
pdV=NkBdT.
(3)
Consequently,
CpdT=(CV+NkB)dT,
(4)
and the Mayer relation is
Cp−CV=NkB.
(5)
The specific-heat ratio is therefore
γ=CVCp=1+CVNkB.
