The minimal polynomial mα is the unique monic polynomial of least positive degree such that mα(α)=0. The Cayley-Hamilton theorem says that α satisfies its characteristic polynomial, so such polynomials exist. Dividing any two monic candidates of least degree shows uniqueness.
If mα(x)=xm, then αm=0 but αm−1=0. The least r for which (α3)r=0 is the least integer satisfying 3r≥m. Hence
mα3(x)=x⌈m/3⌉.
