A bilinear form B on a Lie algebra is invariant when
B([x,y],z)=B(x,[y,z]),
(1)
equivalently B([x,y],z)+B(y,[x,z])=0.
Choose a basis (xi) of g and its B-dual basis (xi). The Casimir element is
Ω=∑ixixi∈U(g),
(2)
where U(g) is the universal enveloping algebra. The tensor ∑ixi⊗xi corresponds under B:g≅g∗ to the identity endomorphism, so invariance of B makes it fixed by the diagonal adjoint action. Applying multiplication U(g)⊗U(g)→U(g) gives
[x,Ω]=0
(3)
for every x∈g. Thus Ω lies in the center of an associative algebra of U(g).
