Introduce the linear sigma model field
Σ=σI+iπaτa,Σ↦LΣR†.
(1)
A suitable renormalizable potential is
V(Σ)=−2μ2Tr(Σ†Σ)+4λ[Tr(Σ†Σ)]2,
(2)
with a small symmetry-breaking source proportional to the quark-mass matrix when desired. A vacuum ⟨Σ⟩=vI is fixed precisely by L=R, so the unbroken group is the diagonal isospin SU(2)V. The three broken axial generators produce the pion triplet π±,π0, which become pseudo-Goldstone bosons when mu,md are restored.
