The characteristic polynomial χA(t)=det(tI−A) has degree n. By the fundamental theorem of algebra, it has a complex root λ. Hence
det(λI−A)=0,
(1)
so λI−A has a nonzero kernel. Any nonzero v in that kernel satisfies
Av=λv.
(2)
Thus λ is an eigenvalue and v is a corresponding eigenvector.
