b
At step n, the parent and daughter rest masses are
m(Rn)=nM+m0,m(Q)+m(Rn−1)=m+(n−1)M+m0.
(1)
The decay is allowed when M≥m, which holds because M=λm with λ>1. Hence all N stages occur:
RN⟶R0+NQ.
(2)
The initial rest mass is NM+m0 and the final rest mass is Nm+m0. Thus
Δm=N(M−m)=Nm(λ−1)
(3)
of rest mass is converted into kinetic energy, corresponding to energy Nm(λ−1)c2.
