The matrix
P=XT(XXT)−1X
(1)
is the orthogonal projection onto the row space of X. Since XPβ=Xβ, the empirical risks of hβ and hPβ are equal. Orthogonality gives
∥β∥2=∥Pβ∥2+∥(I−P)β∥2,
(2)
so q(β)≥q(Pβ), with strict inequality unless (I−P)β=0. Therefore the minimizer lies in the row space:
β=Pβ=XTα.
(3)
Because XT is injective when XXT is invertible, minimizing over that row space is equivalent to minimizing r(α)=q(XTα).
