Write x˙μ=dxμ/ds and L=−gμνx˙μx˙ν. Varying T=∫Lds with fixed endpoints and then choosing proper time as parameter, for which L=1, gives the Euler-Lagrange equation
dτd(gμνx˙ν)−21∂μgαβx˙αx˙β=0.
(1)
Expanding the derivative, raising the free index with the inverse metric, and using the symmetry of x˙αx˙β gives the geodesic equation
x¨ρ+Γραβx˙αx˙β=0,Γραβ=21gρμ(∂αgμβ+∂βgμα−∂μgαβ).
(2)
These are the Christoffel symbols of the Levi-Civita connection.
