The definition of the extrinsic curvature of a spatial hypersurface and ⊥ρμ=δρμ+nρnμ give
Kμν=−(δρμ+nρnμ)∇ρnν=−∇μnν−nμaν,
(1)
where aν=nρ∇ρnν is the normal acceleration. Hence
−∇μnν=Kμν+nμaν.
(2)
Differentiating nνnν=−1 shows nνaν=0, so the acceleration is spatial as required.
