Extrinsic curvature of a spatial hypersurface ($K_{ij}$)

With future unit normal $n^{\mu }$, the convention $K_{\mu \nu }=-{\perp }^{\rho }{}_{\mu }{\nabla }_{\rho }{n}_{\nu }$ measures how the hypersurface is embedded in spacetime.
