The Wronskian is W=y1y2′−y2y1′. Abel's identity gives
W′=−pW.
(1)
If W=0, the two column vectors in the displayed representation form a basis of R2 at each x. Differentiating the first component and comparing it with the second gives
u′y1+v′y2=0.
(2)
Substitution in the differential equation gives
u′y1′+v′y2′=f.
(3)
Solving this two-by-two system yields
u′=−Wy2f,v′=Wy1f.
