A left group action of G on a set S is a function G×S→S, written (g,s)↦g⋅s, satisfying
e⋅s=s,(gh)⋅s=g⋅(h⋅s)
(1)
for all g,h∈G, s∈S. The orbit of a group action through s and the stabilizer subgroup of s are, respectively,
G⋅s={g⋅s:g∈G},Gs={g∈G:g⋅s=s}.
(2)
The identity element belongs to Gs. If g,h∈Gs, then (gh)⋅s=g⋅(h⋅s)=g⋅s=s, so gh∈Gs. If g∈Gs, applying g−1 to g⋅s=s gives s=g−1⋅s, so g−1∈Gs. These facts prove that the stabilizer subgroup is a subgroup of G.
