The comparison test for series states that, for 0≤un≤vn eventually, convergence of ∑vn implies convergence of ∑un. Equivalently, divergence of ∑un implies divergence of ∑vn.
For ∣z∣<1, the coefficient bound gives
∑n=1∞∣anzn∣≤M∑n=1∞∣z∣n<∞
(1)
by the geometric series formula and the comparison test for series. The single term a0 does not affect convergence. For ∣z∣≥1,
∣anzn∣>m∣z∣n≥m>0(n≥1),
(2)
so the terms do not tend to zero. The fact that terms of a convergent series tend to zero excludes convergence there. Thus
R=1.
