Use the ceiling function to choose positive integer coefficients
an=⌈α−n⌉(n≥0).
(1)
Because 0<α<1, we have α−n≥1 and
α−n≤an<α−n+1≤2α−n.
(2)
For ∣z∣<α, the comparison test for series with the geometric series gives
∑n=0∞∣anzn∣≤2∑n=0∞(α∣z∣)n<∞.
(3)
For ∣z∣≥α, we instead have ∣anzn∣≥(∣z∣/α)n≥1, so the terms do not tend to zero. Thus the power series has radius of convergence exactly α.
