We have D(In)=detA. Define a function of the columns of B by
F(B)=D(B)+(1−detA)detB.
(1)
It is an alternating multilinear map, because both summands are, and F(In)=detA+1−detA=1. Hence F is a normalized determinantal function. By the asserted uniqueness of the determinant, F(B)=detB for every B. Rearranging yields
det(AB)=detAdetB.
(2)
This argument also covers detA=0 without dividing by it.
