b
Expand the first component using the definition of the cross product:
[a×(b×c)]1=a2(b1c2−b2c1)−a3(b3c1−b1c3)=b1(a2c2+a3c3)−c1(a2b2+a3b3)=b1(a⋅c)−c1(a⋅b).
(1)
The added a1b1c1 terms cancel in the last step. Cyclically permuting the component indices gives the other two components, proving the vector triple product identity
a×(b×c)=b(a⋅c)−c(a⋅b).
