In polar coordinates, put x=rcosθ and y=rsinθ. Differentiating along the curve gives
xdy−ydx=r2dθ.

The cardioid has r≥0 and is traversed once counterclockwise as θ increases from 0 to 2π. Its cusp at θ=π causes no difficulty: split the line integral there, or exclude a small arc and take its limit. Thus signed area as a boundary integral gives
∣D∣=21∫02π(1+cosθ)2dθ=21∫02π(23+2cosθ+21cos2θ)dθ=23π.
