Let A={∣Z∣>2} and B={Z>0}. The standard normal distribution is symmetric and assigns no probability mass to zero. Thus P(B)=1/2, and its equal two-sided tails give
P(A)=2P(Z>2),P(A∩B)=P(Z>2).
(1)
Therefore
P(A∩B)=P(A)P(B),
(2)
so the two events are independent. The permitted approximation gives P(A)≈0.05 and P(A∩B)≈0.025, but independence is exact.
