Differentiate the ordinary least squares objective in a. Its normal equations for linear least squares are
∑i(Yi−α−βxi)=0,∑ixi(Yi−α−βxi)=0.
(1)
Using ∑ixi=0 and Sxx=∑ixi2>0 gives
α=Y,β=Sxx∑ixiYi.
(2)
The Hessian matrix of the objective in (a,b) is 2diag(n,Sxx), which is positive-definite, so this is its unique global minimum. For the observed estimates, replace Yi by yi.
