For a unit direction v, the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality gives ∇f⋅v≤∣∇f∣, with equality in the gradient direction. Its norm here is 4+9+1=14, so the direction of fastest increase is
vmax=14(2,−3,1).
(1)
The maximal directional derivative itself is 14.
