A sequence in a metric space is a Cauchy sequence ifThis compares sufficiently late terms with each other; it does not assume the existence of a limit in the space.
A metric space is complete if every Cauchy sequence in it converges to a point of that same space. A limit in a larger ambient completion is insufficient for this definition.
