A topology on contains and , is closed under arbitrary unions, and is closed under finite intersections. Its members are the open sets. A subset is closed precisely when is open.
The subspace topology on is
If is open in , each such intersection is open in . Conversely, an open subset of contained in is its own intersection with . Thus the open sets of are exactly the open subsets of contained in in this case.
The closure is the intersection of all closed subsets of containing . It is the smallest such closed subset. Equivalently, exactly when every open neighborhood of meets .
We prove (i)(ii). If with open and closed, then . Hence
so . By the subspace topology definition this makes open in its closure.
We prove (ii)(iii). If is open in , its complement is closed in the subspace . A relatively closed subset of a closed subset of is closed in : it is the intersection of that closed subset with another closed subset of . Since a closure is closed, is closed in .
We prove (iii)(i). If is closed in , set and . Then is open, is closed, and
Together the three implications prove the equivalence. These are the standard characterizations of a locally closed subset.
