Evaluate the orthogonal polynomial projection kernel on its diagonal:
R3(1)(λ)=ℓ=0∑2ϕℓ(λ)2=2πe−λ2/2[1+λ2+2(λ2−1)2]=22πλ4+3e−λ2/2.
(1)
The λ2 terms cancel. Integrating against Lebesgue measure gives (EZ4+3)/2=3 for a standard normal random variable Z, checking the correlation function of a point process normalization.
