Direct multiplication of the three Pauli matrices gives X2=Y2=Z2=I, XY=iZ and their cyclic permutations, with reversed products changing sign. Consequently (a⋅σ)(b⋅σ)=(a⋅b)I+i(a×b)⋅σ. In particular (s⋅σ)2=∣s∣2I, which gives the eigenvalues (1±∣s∣)/2 of a qubit density matrix.
